San Luis Highlanders Fencing Club

WELCOME


San Luis Highlanders Fencing Club is a non-profit fencing club serving San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas of the Central California Coast. We welcome all abilities and skill levels and offer instruction to all aged 10 and up.  If you have fenced before and are looking for some friendly competition or if you're brand new to the sport, welcome!


The sport of fencing offers excellent physical and mental challenges for youth and adult alike!

Mondays - 6:30pm to 8:00pm 

Youth and adult recreational fencing, intermediate youth class


Mondays - 8:00pm to 10:00pm

Recreational and competitive fencing, individual lessons


Thursdays - 6:45pm to 8:15pm
Youth/adult beginning fencing class

Meet Our Coaches

Eric McDonald

Highlanders' Head Coach, Eric has competed in all three weapons.  A level four graduate of the USFA Coaches College program in both foil and epee, Eric has been a certified instructor since 1986.  Head coach of numerous teams through-out his 45+ year career, Eric served as the Head Coach for the Cal Poly Fencing Club (1992-2013), successfully leading the team to numerous conference championships.

Ward Cochran

Ward is a foil coach at San Luis Highlanders and the head coach for Cal Poly Fencing. Ward started fencing foil in 1978 at Cuesta College, under the instruction of Adele Frey and John Harris. He began coaching at Cuesta in 1983, and became interested in epee due to Eric McDonald. He has continued to fence and compete in both foil and epee since 1995.

Kyle Yamasaki

Kyle started fencing in 2003 and began coaching at San Luis Highlanders and Cal Poly Fencing club in 2012. Still a serious competitor, Kyle is a certified epee coach with the USFCA, and rated as a referee for both foil and epee.

Sean Graham

Sean began fencing at Cal Poly in 1999. Saber is his preferred weapon. Sean currently coaches saber for the Cal Poly Fencing Club and occasionally coaches for the San Luis Highlanders.
